Monday Review: Tricity this week.In the 80th edition of Monday Review, watch how not paying anything for parking is going to be a reality in Chandigarh. Chandigarh’s municipal corporation has agreed in principle to hand over 60 parking lots to the market welfare associations for running those free of cost. But just for two years. Images from Sectors 8, 9, 11, 17, 18, 19, and 22, the city’s commercial hubs, show all the good parking spots occupied. The city has 80 markets with parking lots but only 20 lots are paid, while 60 are unmanaged. The smart parking system continues to be delayed, while for want of monitoring of the parked vehicles, their security is an issue. In many lots, people park their two-wheelers in the bays meant for the cars. The MC has tried penalising the paid-parking contractors, by up to Rs 10,000 in some cases, yet the ground situation doesn’t change. So, now they are going to tell the market bodies to run these lots free of cost. Markets such as Sector 22 already have an own-managed parking system, with their own parking assistants. We asked the visitors about their experience? They said there were more cars than the parking space could fit. Managing the free lots will cost each market Rs 40,000 a month but they won’t take the responsibility of your parked vehicle. The shopkeepers also don’t know yet how they will enforce discipline. Chandigarh remains the place to fill up tanks, even though Punjab cut its petrol price by Rs 9 and the diesel rate by Rs 4.4. But the Mohali rates come closer to the price in Chandigarh and Panchkula. For your TOI copy, call us at this number: 1800 121 0005. We leave you with good wishes for Gurpurab.
