Monday Review: Tricity this week.In a special 81st edition of Monday Review, TOI’s weekly home update of print news from Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula, TOI takes you on a walk-through of Chandigarh’s new public attraction, built 45 years after Rock Garden. We are at the Chandigarh Bird Park, with chief conservator of forest Debendra Dalai, man behind the project. Inaugurated by Savita Kovind, wife of President Ram Nath Kovind, Chandigarh Bird Park is inside the Nagar Van behind the Sukhna Lake, which already is a winter home to migratory birds. People are liking this facility and the chief conservator is hopeful that in the coming days more number of visitors will turn up. Remember the timings viewers, The park opens from 10am to 5pm but the entry closes at 4 in the evening. The forest and wildlife department has developed it for nature education and creating public awareness about bird conservation. The walk-through aviaries are created for exotic birds bred commonly in India. Meet African Love Birds, Budgerigars, White Swan, Black Swan, Wood duck, Golden Pheasant, Yellow Golden Pheasant, Green Wing Macaw, Sun Conures, African Grey Parrot, Finches and Melanistic Pheasant. We have planned the enclosure in such a way that the birds, apart from having a free flight, are able to nest in their natural habitat. This is so that they like to stay at the aviary and the visitors are able to admire them as they walk past the cages. The aviary does not fall under the definition of a zoo going by Section 2 (39) of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. All species except the Mandarin Duck, are non-native and outside the definition of captive animals. For your TOI copy, call us at this number: 1800 121 0005. Enjoy festive images from Gurpurab.
