- Monday Review: Tricity this week
Monday Review: Tricity this week.In the 76th edition of Monday Review, TOI's weekly home update of print news from Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula, watch how the city celebrated its Dussehra without crackers and why there will be no bursting of crackers on Diwali, Gurpurab, and New Year as well. But why a cracker ban for Dussehra? Chandigarh was bamboozled. City BJP president Arun Sood claimed the celebrations will go on like previous years and that the party had positive signs from the administration, but any official withdrawal of the orders had not come until the festival morning. Sood went to the administrator and the UT adviser with the National Green Tribunal orders that the cracker ban wasn't for Dussehra and with the argument that the burning of effigies was a long-held tradition and a matter of faith. Yet, Ravan survived a demonic 2020 and you could almost hear him laughing again. The traders who bought licence for cracker stalls have opposed the restrictions. The cops say they are bound by the orders. Eventually, many Ramlila committees did use a few crackers to burn the effigies of Ravan, Kumbhkarn, and Meghnad. Police registered six FIRs. Dussehra came out of Covid's shadow in Panchkula and Mohali, where things were different at the seven venues. 'Sindur khela’ marked Durga Puja. On Dussehra, Chandigarh's AQI was in the satisfactory range of 89 as opposed to 122 last year when there were no celebrations. Much of the air pollution was because of field fires. Petrol price breached the psychological barrier of Rs 100 per litre for the first time in Chandigarh. Dealers fear petrol will cross Rs 110 in a few weeks.
