- Garbage, potholes make Sector 26 grain market a reeking mess
Times News Network Chandigarh: Despite Chandigarh slipping to the 66th slot in the Swachh rankings, piles of garbage, Sector 26 vegetable and grain ma. - Monday Review: Tricity this week
Monday Review: Tricity this week.In the 82nd edition of Monday Review, TOI’s weekly home update of print news from Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula, watch how a city once in the top 10 has slipped drastically in the Swachh Survekshan rankings. Mohali takes the biggest stride forward, breaking into the top 100 for the first time. The City Beautiful nosedived from last year’s 16th position to 66th out of 4,320 cities adjudged in the urban affairs ministry’s 2021 survey, Chandigarh’s poorest performance since the annual review started in 2016. In the above-10-lakh population category also, it has dropped 8 places to finish at 16. It scored the least in certification, which shows that the citizens are not impressed with the MC's work. Its citizen voice score could be better. It lagged in the segregation, collection, processing, and disposal of waste. It is not fully garbage-free yet and not all its people know how to use the Swachhta app. If any consolation, the city was first among the UTs in completing the new Safai Mitra Sureksha challenge, which is about looking after the betterment and safety of those who clean the manholes and septic tanks, and how much of this work has become mechanical. Chandigarh improved only slightly in waste segregation and collection, besides sustainable sanitation. It still hasn't achieved 100% door-to-door collection of segregated waste, while the certification score has reduced to 50%. The garbage free city or GFC rating of Chandigarh has fallen to one star.
