      Tribune Web DeskChandigarh June 16Chandigarh on Wednesday reported 41 new Covid-19 cases and two deaths related to the virus. The total number of cases in the city has reached 61241 of which 462 are active cases. The death toll in the city has reached 799 as the two patients suffering from co-morbidities succumbed to the virus. A total of 63 patients have been discharged including persons from home isolation who have completed 10 days and are asymptomatic as per Ministry of Health guidelines. As many as 59980 people have recovered from the virus so far.

Wary of the action by the administration private hospitals have already agreed to pay back the excess amount in a time-bound manner. The district administration had also asked the hospitals to conduct a self-audit of all Covid related bills and submit the report to the committee for cross checking. Gupta had also written to Health Minister Anil Vij requesting for an audit of bills issued by the private hospitals. In June last year the Haryana Government had capped the daily package rate for Covid-19 treatment in private hospitals between Rs 8000 and Rs 18000.

      Tribune News ServiceChandigarh June 18More than hundred research scholars staged a protest outside the Vice-Chancellor's office at Panjab University here today to press for their demands. The protesting scholars' sought extension in submission of thesis besides allowing hostels to all the scholars. Student representatives of various parties urged the PU administration to fulfil the demands of scholars at the earliest and stop harassing them by calling their parents and respective guides. After protesting at the VC office for an hour students decided to march towards the VC house. As per a PU statement “The university authorities advised the protesting students outside the Vice-Chancellor's office to have a dialogue with the authorities but some protestors entered into a scuffle with the security and police personnel and tried to break the barriers.

      New Delhi June 20Further advance of southwest monsoon into remaining parts of Delhi Rajasthan west Uttar Pradesh Haryana Chandigarh and Punjab is likely to be slow. India Meteorological Department (IMD) made the forecast on Sunday based on large-scale features showing no favourable condition. The wind pattern by the numerical models also do not indicate any favourable condition for sustained rainfall over the region during the forecast period the IMD said. Moderate to severe thunderstorms accompanied by frequent cloud to ground lightning is very likely over east Uttar Pradesh and Bihar during next 24 hours the IMD further said.

      Panchkula: The district will observe a 'Mega Tika Day' for all above the age of 18 on Monday targeting to jab around 15000 people. The Centre's new plan to provide free vaccination to everyone above 18 years of age will come into force on Monday. Initially these buses will ply on five routes - Chandikotla to Chandigarh Sector 17; Jalauli to Saketri; Singhpura to Chandigarh Sector 17; Singhpura to Saketri; and Kalka to Saketri. “With the introduction of the local bus service better transport facilities will be available for passengers on all these routes. As Gupta's official vehicle entered the bus stand for the flag-off ceremony workers were seen manually cleaning stagnant water within the terminus. Surprise visit to DTO officeMeanwhile Gupta made a surprise visit to the office of District Transport Officer on the bus stand premises.

      Our CorrespondentFatehgarh Sahib June 14The police claimed to have busted a gang of highway robbers with the arrest of its five members while two are still at large. Narrating their modus operandi the SP said the gang used to keep a close watch on roadside dhabas. Whenever they noticed a truck loaded with scrap or iron from other states parked at any dhaba they used to follow it the SP added. When the truck approached any deserted place the gang used to stop it and drag its driver and cleaner out of the vehicle the SP said. The gang looted a truck loaded with scrap in Sangrur district on the Sunam-Bhawanigarh road recently.

According to weatherman cloudy sky and light rain is expected during the next three days. Light to moderate rainfall (1-3 cm) at many places with isolated heavy rainfall (6-7 cm) is likely to continue over Punjab Haryana and Chandigarh over the next 48 hours. Thereafter rain and thunderstormactivity is likely to increase from early morning hours of June 15 to 16. During the two days light to moderate rainfall (1-5 cm) is expected at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-12 cm) at some places.

According to the police Constable Sumer Singh of the Haryana Armed Police who was on guard duty at the house alleged that Preeti Jhakhar and her son Atharva Chaudhary forcibly entered House No. The police were informed following which both suspects were arrested. Preeti was earlier arrested on April 26 under Sections 448 and 353 of the IPC.
